I was recently invited by Radio 3's words and literature show The Verb to turn up at Elizabeth Gaskell's house in Manchester (which has just reopened to the public) and read out a specially commissioned letter. Despite being surrounded by eminent Gaskell scholars and other clever people, I survived. As well as pretending to be Mrs Gaskell, I also did a bonus bit of Werner.
